How NHL Moneyline Odds Work — and When to Use Them

The NHL moneyline is the simplest bet in hockey: pick the winner, collect if they win. That's it. No spread to cover, no margin required.

What Do the Numbers Actually Mean?

American odds express profit relative to a $100 baseline. A negative number is what you risk to win $100. A positive number is what you win on a $100 bet.

  • -140 favorite: Wager $140 to profit $100. Total returned: $240.
  • +130 underdog: Wager $100 to profit $130. Total returned: $230.

I've seen bettors lose track of that distinction constantly. Negative means expensive. Positive means value — if you're right.

Why Does the Moneyline Price Move?

Goalie news is the biggest driver. A starter scratch can shift the line 15–20 cents immediately. Back-to-back schedules matter too — a tired team on the second night of a road trip gets discounted fast. Always confirm starting goalies before locking in a price.

Moneyline vs. Puck Line — Which Should You Use?

The moneyline pays out on any winning margin. The puck line betting's fixed ±1.5 spread forces the favorite to win by two or more goals. In close NHL games — which are the norm — that extra goal is hard to guarantee. I generally prefer the moneyline on tight matchups between evenly skilled teams.
